Zizzers show how far they’ve come in overtime battle with Sikeston
Two months after a 9–1 loss to Sikeston, West Plains pushed the same opponent into overtime in a district semifinal. The Zizzers’ season ended with a 2–1 loss on a golden goal, but their final performance showed just how much this team had grown.
The Zizzers outplayed and outworked Sikeston for much of the match, turning an early-season mismatch into a battle for a spot in Saturday’s district championship.
Inside the West Plains locker room, the belief was there.
“Our guys played with so much effort, fight, urgency, heart and grit tonight,” Zizzers head coach Jimmy Miller said. The team carried that determination onto the field, competing through 90 minutes before Sikeston’s overtime goal ended the match.
For Miller, the performance reflected a season of improvement and a team that kept responding to adversity. West Plains had come a long way since that first meeting with Sikeston, which ended before 65 minutes had elapsed.
“Even in defeat, I could not be any more proud of our team and their effort, than I am tonight,” Miller said. “They battled and gave absolutely all they had.”
Seniors leave a foundation for the program
For the second consecutive year, the Zizzers reached a district semifinal that was decided by one goal. This time, West Plains finished just a play or two away from reaching the championship match.
Miller credited his seniors with helping establish the program’s culture and expectations through their leadership, dedication and willingness to believe in what the team was building.
His message to them was clear: Hold your heads high. They finished their Zizzer Soccer careers knowing they had given everything they had.
The loss hurts, especially for the seniors whose time on the field together has ended. But their final match gave West Plains plenty to be proud of—a team that overcame adversity, kept improving and challenged an opponent that had overwhelmed it just two months earlier.
That growth is part of what these seniors leave behind, along with the relationships and memories they helped build.
