The Zizzers gave quite a scare to undefeated & untested Helias as they closed in on a victory during the final minutes of the state quarterfinal game in Jefferson City. Prior to facing the Zizzers, Helias’ closest game was an 11-point victory in game 1 of their season – the rest were largely blowout games (similar to the Zizzer’s undefeated season 2 years ago). But on this night, Helias knew they faced a worthy opponent, and they just barely squeaked by with a win.
The Zizzers had a slow start in the first quarter, allowing Helias to get up on them 17-0, but the second quarter saw the Zizzers roar into action and take control on the field. It was a back and forth battle after that.
Enter 4th quarter where the Zizzers trail Helias 28-36. After Kenslow punted deep to Helias’ 1 yard line where Kyler Stowers touched the ball before it rolled into the end zone. There’s 2:47 left in the game. Zizzers trail by 8 and Helias has the ball.
And now another combo of plays in the 4th quarter sets the moment up for the Zizzers to plan an upset over Helias.
First was Titus Seley’s tackle for a loss on Helias’ 24 yard line. Next, was Connor Lair’s HUGE tackle deep in the backfield on 3rd and 7 to setup Helias to punt. And then Colt Hickson BLOCKS the punt to give the Zizzers an amazing starting position deep in Helias territory on the 12 yard line!
Followed by a series of ball carries by none other than Titus Seley. With 1 minute left, Seley drove from the 3 to the 1 and stretched out to push the ball over the line for the TD. The officials ruled for a loose ball, recovered by Helias.
Time is running out but the Zizzers still have a trick up their sleeves. With Helias starting on their own 1 yard line, the Zizzer Defense tackles the QB in the end zone for a safety to put the Zizzers within 6 points of a victory! 1:04 left in the game.
Kenslow to Miller – first down! Kenslow to Seley, complete. We’re driving for the end zone. Unfortunately for our Zizzers this is where our momentum runs out. Zizzers try 2 unsuccessful long passes. Finally Kenslow tries to run it, but not enough for the first down and we turn the ball over on downs. Helias takes a knee to end the game.
State ranked #1 undefeated Helias keeps their perfect record, but they know beyond a doubt that they faced a worthy opponent who almost ended their perfect run. Our Zizzers can be proud of this terrific 2020 season.
We look forward to next football season. Go Zizzers!
