The Varsity Football Zizzers (Class 4) traveled to Springfield and faced a heartbreaking loss against undefeated Kickapoo (Class 6), 42-21. The boys fought hard and never gave up the fight – and we are very proud of them for that. Photos from the game can be found here.
Keep your heads up boys – there’s still more games to win. We can count this loss as a learning experience to point out areas where we have some weaknesses that we need to strengthen. So, we’re confident Coach Ary and staff – and the team will learn, adapt and overcome these things to be a better and stronger team than before.
We had a strong comeback near the end of the game and it was a momentum changer that put us within close striking distance. And we were so excited and full of hope because the Zizzers have been down before and have come back strong – just like this time.
But, Kickapoo found a way to dramatically slow down running-back Martin, and put pressure on quarterback Hall – tactics which the Zizzers are also adept at doing to other teams. Kickapoo’s main man, Malachi Stout, was an offensive force to be reckoned with – and Neushwander & crew of the Zizzer defense did find ways to stop him – but an early Kickapoo kickoff return was turned into a touchdown when we had gaps in our defense near the middle. Then a punt return was run down to the 6-yard line by the Chiefs. If we take away those 2 ‘mistakes’ this game would have looked VERY different.
Bottom line: We are proud of our Zizzers! AND we know they will learn from this, adapt, overcome and execute even better in the remaining games. Go Zizzers!
